The use of FEA and semi-empirical equations for weight estimation of a passenger aircraft

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the result calculations that were performed estimate structural weight passenger aircraft using novel technological solution. Mass penalty resulting from installation fuselage boundary layer ingestion device was needed in CENTRELINE project be able real benefits applied technology. Design/methodology/approach This focusses on finite element analysis (FEA) and wing primary load-carrying structures. Masses obtained these analyses used as an input for total mass calculation based semi-empirical equations. Findings Combining FEA with equations makes it possible structures at early technology readiness level gives possibility obtaining more accurate results than those only empirical formulas. methodology allows estimating case unusual solutions, which are not covered by formulas available literature. Practical implications Accurate estimation earlier design stage presented methodology, easier less costly changes designed aircrafts. Originality/value original method a two-track approach. analytical literature have worked well aeroplanes conventional design, but thanks connection paper, structure unconventional solutions.
